PREVENTING PANIC ATTACKS

In today's hectic world, panic attacks are a very common phenomenon. Though they are widely prevalent nowadays, the worst part about them remains their suddenness. Even today it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what will trigger off a panic attack.  But if you can somehow determine the cause, preventing panic attacks becomes much easier.

For example, if you have certain knowledge that a particular phobia of yours is the root cause for some of the panic attacks, then you can go about treating those phobias in order to get rid of panic attacks. You might want to try out hypnosis at this point to treat your phobias.

Certain common fears are also very often at the root of panic attacks. For example the fear of losing control might lead to bad bouts of panic. Try professional help to get rid of such fears and you will automatically get rid of panic attacks as well.

However, it is very true that you can follow the above methods only when you know the reason behind such panic attacks. It is much more difficult to deal with panic when the reason is unknown. But though it is difficult, it can actually be done.

You could start by concentrating on some physical symptoms which signal the beginning of a panic attack. For example if you notice that during panic attacks your breathing becomes fast and shallow, deliberately start breathing slow and deep whenever your breathing becomes quick. Initially, it might be a difficult job, but regular practice is sure to make it a cakewalk for you eventually.

However, if you are still in the dark as to the root cause of your severe panic attacks, here are the three most important methods you can try

Proper medication

You might want to try out prescription medicines like benzodiazepine, certain anti-depressants etc. These are actually quite effective. But on the flipside, medication does have side effects when used over a long period of time, and many people do not like going on drugs to treat panic attacks. If you are one of them, then the following methods might help you out.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This is something which resembles a normal vaccine. Through various techniques it might produce a very mild panic attack, but at the end of the day it successfully treats the greater stronger panic attack. It also helps you to tackle the panic symptoms better.

Relaxation

The trump card of this technique is that it has no side effects. Besides most relaxation techniques are very simple to follow as well. For example, deep and slow breathing is an extremely effective relaxation technique for many.

Diet

Try to avoid substances like caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes. All of these artificial stimulants initially act as physical perks, but at the end of the day they all end up depressing you even further. Alcohol is a potent natural depressant.

Also, include lots of fresh stuff in your diet. Processed food has artificial substances which can stress us out even more.

Exercise

Regular workouts help in releasing feel-good hormones in your blood which help you overcome stress and strain. Remember, a healthy mind resides in a healthy body.
